What College Didn’t Prepare Me For

 

Time to share with college students all the things that you wish you knew before you put on your cap and gown! I'm writing a book on the topic and am eager to hear what YOU have to say!

Moving Home

1.      Did you move home after college? If so, what was the biggest adjustment for you?

2.      Did you find that your living space had changed?

3.      Did your parents treat you like an adult or a child?

4.      What was the biggest struggle about living far from home?

 

Living Away from Home

1.      Did you move far from your hometown upon graduation? Why?

2.      How did you find your post-college home away from home? Was finding an affordable place hard?

3.      How did you adjust to the domestics of living? Did you take up cooking or struggle to take care of your apartment/house?

 

Not Using Your Degree/Major

1.      Upon graduation, did you want to apply your major to your job?

2.      Did you think about trying something not related to your major while you were fresh out of college? Why?

3.      Did you or your friends give you direct or indirect guilt over not using your degree?

4.      Do you plan to go into that field at all? Why or why not?

Choosing a Job

1.      What job search tools did you use to find a job? What worked best and what didn’t?

2.      Did you need to do some research about how to find a job/prepare for an interview?

3.      If you got multiple offers, what did you base your decision on?

4.      How long do you feel that you need to be at your job before you move up or switch companies? 

5.      Do you feel that it’s better to jump around while you’re young? Why or why not?

3.      Do you find office politics a hassle or entertainment?

4.      Have you been in an uncomfortable situation at work that you weren’t sure how to handle? How did you go about handling it?

5.      Is your job boring? Did you think it would be and do you want to find something more challenging?

6.      Are you happy at your current job? Why or why not?

 

Managing Your Own Finances

1.      Have your parents financially supported you post-graduation?

2.      Does your job cover your basic expenses or do you find that you live paycheck to paycheck? How do you feel about that?

3.      Do you have credit problems? Do you think that the wide market and availability of credit vendors at school aids in younger people having credit problems?

4.      Do you work with a budget? How did you come to do so?

5.      What advice would you give to college students on how to handle their money after graduation?

 

Quarterlife Crisis

1.      Do you know what a quarterlife crisis is? Do you believe in it? What’s your definition?

2.      Have you experienced feelings of panic, fear, anxiety, worry or depression when thinking about life after college?

3.      What pressures have been put on you, or have you put on yourself before and after graduating?

4.      Do you lean on friends/family for support?

 

Having a Social Life
